Dental implants

Content of the article:

Intro

Dental implants will give you a better quality of life. Teeth that look and function like your own have a very positive and beneficial effect on self-esteem and health.

Improve your ability to eat, talk and laugh

Dental implants from Straumann and NeoBiotech offered by our clinic will provide you with benefits that are associated with stable and healthy teeth. Thanks to this, you will be able to bite into an apple without a worry or laugh again. Regaining self-confidence when communicating with people – whether at work or in casual conversation with friends or family – is another benefit implants offer.

With extensive tooth loss, the function of the chewing muscles is significantly reduced, the volume of muscle fibers decreases, and thus entire muscle groups shrink. Soft parts loose support when the jaws are toothless, the corners of the mouth sink, the nose and chin appear protruding, the wrinkles and folds of the skin deepen.

That is why all-ceramic dental crowns on top of implants, created by our team, are modified in such a way as to match your natural facial features and restore your smile.

Why do the jaw and the mandible need teeth to maintain their shape?

Dental implants will restore your radiant smile and also affect the distribution of chewing pressure that arises when the teeth of the jaw and the mandible come into mutual contact. This is very important for healthy bone stimulation and for maintaining the shape of your face.

The roots of teeth of a healthy oral cavity transfer the force of chewing pressure to the bone of the jaw and the mandible. This helps preserve the bone. The teeth and bone of the jaw and the mandible will remain stable under such conditions.

However, if one or more teeth are lost, chewing pressure is not transmitted to the bone, resulting in bone loss. Over time, this leads to a shift of the adjacent teeth into the gap, the protrusion of opposite teeth or the overall change in the appearance of the face.

Traditional methods of tooth replacement, which are bridges and partially removable dentures, cannot stop the bone loss in the place of the missing tooth.

Implant therapy may prevent bone loss because the implant transfers the force of chewing pressure to the jaw and the mandible in the same natural way as the original tooth root does.

Am I a good candidate for dental implants?

Whether the loss is due to an accident, disease, or dental caries, dental implants are a suitable replacement option for almost anyone.

Dental implants can be used if you:

  • miss a single tooth – instead of a fixed dental bridge
  • miss several teeth – instead of bridges or partially removable dentures
  • miss all teeth – instead of removable dentures

The way to a new smile: easier than you think.

How do I know if I am the right candidate?

If you think that dental implants are the right choice for you, just contact us and we will arrange an appointment and consultation.

Implantation cannot be performed if you have inflammatory disease of the teeth, gums or bones, which would significantly affect success of surgery, integration and stability of the implant itself. For this reason, a thorough examination of the teeth and gums is a must.

What are the approximate chances of a successful implementation?

Despite decades of clinical and scientific research, dental implants are not 100% successful. However, the success rate has increased dramatically since the beginning and we can confirm without any reservations that over 90% of all implants inserted by us have been successful.

Long-term results are also maintained above 90% and are steadily improving. If the dental implant fails to integrate, it can be easily removed. Regeneration process follows removal of such implant, and a new implant is subsequently inserted, or other options are consulted.

What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is a missing tooth replacement. It consists of three parts – the implant (the implanted part inserted directly into the bone), the titanium body (the part that connects the fixture to the crown) and the all-ceramic crown.

Nowadays, implants are mainly made of titanium – a metal that is biologically compatible and provides the necessary strength and durability, as well as the ability to osseointegrate – "fuse" with the bone.

Dental implants work thanks to a process called osseointegration. This process occurs when bone cells attach directly to the titanium surface of the implant.

An osseointegrated implant can be used to replace one, several, or all of the teeth in the upper and/or lower jaw.

What is the procedure for implant insertion?

Our clinic provides individual advice, careful diagnosis and complete dental treatment, which is a crucial prerequisite for successful tooth replacement with implants.

Phase 0: Examination and Diagnosis

The first step in our clinic is to take a 3D X-ray, thanks to which the dentist gains an understanding of the condition of your teeth and devises treatment options that are best for you. You will discuss the pros and cons of each solution so that you are sufficiently informed about each step of the treatment.

Implants need to be anchored in the jawbone and the mandible like natural teeth. If there is not enough bone available, implants can be inserted at the same time the bone augmentation (replenishment) is done - a proven method for bone formation.

Bone replenishment - augmentation

The body reacts to a missing tooth with bone loss. The only possible alternative to increase bone volume is to replenish it in a process called augmentation. There are various methods of bone augmentation that our physicians will be happy to explain to you. The new bone is added in the implant area where it is missing. This will ensure the necessary stability of the implant. The price of augmentation varies depending on the difficulty (from €200 to €800).

Phase 1: Implantation - insertion of the implant into the bone

The implant – an artificial root – is inserted into the bone in the clinic using local anesthesia. Your dentist will make a suitable bed in your jaw or mandible to insert the implant. During the healing phase, depending on the individual situation, it is possible to deploy a temporary denture. Thanks to this option, you can enjoy a natural-looking smile again already at the early stage of the treatment.

What is a temporary PMMA denture?

Prosthetic work using PMMA material is a prototype of the final denture. If needed, this kind of denture can be adjusted in shape and size according to the patient’s wishes and serves as a precursor to the final crown or bridge.

Healing - the implant merges with your bone

The healing time of the implant, during which the implant will merge securely with the bone, is individual and lasts from 2 to 3 months. Stitches can be removed 7-10 days of implant insertion. For successful healing, good care and oral hygiene are required.

Phase 2: New teeth will be made in the laboratory

Successful healing of the implant is followed by the next stage, essentially consisting of the execution of permanent fixed works. Our dental technicians and our dentist work in cooperation on the production of your new teeth. We have our own dental laboratory and a team of skilled dental technicians.

The quality of the dental crowns is guaranteed by our dental technicians Tibor Gyurkovics and Marián Alman.

How is that done?

Thanks to the modern CAD/CAM system, you do not have to have any imprints taken. The scanner captures the 3D situation in your mouth. The data from this scan is sent directly to the dental technician, where it is digitally processed by the dental technician and sent to a machine that mills dental crowns or dental bridges for implants.

Deployment of prosthetic work

When the work is done, the final crown part is handed over, screwed onto the dental implant and you can laugh, chew and bite again as before.

Care for your dental implant

Just like a natural tooth, an implant requires care because it becomes part of your body. With regular checks, professional dental hygiene and diligent oral hygiene at home, you can extend the functionality of your implant for decades. Regular dental hygiene in our clinic is a warranty condition.

Skilled hygienists will take care of the implants durability

Maintaining healthy gums is essential to ensure the implant durability. Bacteria are deposited in the gum line around the implant. Therefore, this place needs to be thoroughly cleaned.

A combination of professional dental hygiene by our dental hygienist and individual hygiene at home is required. It is ideal to visit our dental hygienist after implantation, as they will show you how to care for the implant and prosthetic work at home and individually determine the need for professional dental hygiene at the clinic.

Replacement of a single missing tooth with an implant

Replacement of one tooth can be achieved with a fixed dental bridge or a dental crown on top of the implant.

1. Crown on top of the implant

The use of a dental implant as a replacement for one missing tooth eliminates the need for intervention in adjacent teeth compared to a conventional fixed bridge. This method of tooth replacement makes it possible to carry out normal hygiene as with natural teeth.

The dental crown, anchored onto the implant, is made to measure from a scan. It is not susceptible to tooth decay, but with insufficient hygiene, other complications may arise in the form of peri implantitis (inflammation in the bone around the implant). The implant with the crown should be routinely inspected during preventive check-ups or according to individual needs.

2. All-ceramic fixed dental bridge

A fixed bridge is a prosthetic solution that requires grinding of two or more teeth adjacent to the gap. The purpose of grinding teeth is to create space for artificial dental crowns. Anchoring the dental bridge onto natural teeth increases the load on the pillar teeth and makes their hygiene relatively difficult.

Conventional fixed bridges must be replaced if tooth decay or periodontal disease develops on the pillar teeth. In some cases, the tooth nerve may be damaged in the preparation of adjacent teeth, which requires treatment of the tooth’s root system.

Replacement of several teeth with implants

Replacement of several missing teeth can be achieved by introducing dental implants and then making a fixed bridge anchored onto those implants, a fixed bridge anchored onto the patient’s own teeth or a partially removable denture.

1. Fixný mostík upevnený na implantátoch

After the insertion of two or more dental implants and the subsequent healing, it is possible to make a dental bridge fixed with the help of superstructures onto the implants based on a scan.

It is a fixed replacement of two or more teeth in different locations, the patient cannot remove this dental bridge at home. This fixed bridge faithfully replaces the lost group of teeth both aesthetically and mechanically.

2. Fixed conventional dental bridge

A fixed bridge requires grinding of two or more teeth adjacent to the defect to create space for prosthetic denture.

The number of teeth requiring adjustment before anchoring the bridge depends on several factors, such as the number of missing teeth, location in the tooth arch, or the condition of the ground teeth themselves.

3. Partially removable denture

This solution is suitable for patients in whom it is not possible to make a fixed bridge or insert implants. This type of denture can be removed from the mouth to meet the need for normal dental hygiene of residual teeth and the prosthesis itself. The prosthesis is made of metal elements, resin and artificial teeth.

Total dental reconstruction with dental implants

If it is necessary to replace all teeth in the jaw or the mandible, it is possible to completely replace the lost teeth thanks to several implants (mostly 6 in the jaw and 4 in the mandible). This solution is a suitable alternative to a total removable denture (prosthesis). We can proceed if the patient has an adequate amount of bone in the jaw and the mandible, or it is possible to perform augmentation procedures to create enough bone. This process is similar to inserting one or more implants, but there are two options:

1. Toothless jaw: Fixed bridge on top of the implants

Phase zero: Extraction of residual teeth

These are teeth affected by tooth decay or unsuitable as to their location, left behind roots, etc. At this initial stage, we pull out all the remaining teeth or roots and let the bone heal (usually 2-3 months). During this healing, a removable prosthesis is made for the patient.

Phase 1: Implant insertion

Before the procedure, an evaluation of the bone into which the implant is to be inserted is performed based on a CT scan. In the event of a significant bone deficiency, the bone must be replenished (augmented with replacement bone material) several months in advance, but it is often replenished during the implant insertion. The procedure takes place under local anesthesia.

Healing - the implant merges with your bone

This is followed by the healing phase, lasting 2 to 3 months (depending on the type of the implant). The healing period is the time for the so-called osseointegration when the implant surface is inhabited by the patient’s own bone cells and thus the implant literally merges with the bone.

Phase 2: Construction of the bridge

After successful osseointegration, an imprint of the implants position is made. There are several trials (3-4 appointments) and the work is usually done within 2-3 weeks.

All-ceramic bridge with titanium structure

The bridge consists of superstructures and crowns (intermediate pieces). It is screwed directly onto the implants (if necessary, it is possible to remove the prosthetics at any time and adjust it as needed).

  • Price: € 6000 for Neo Biotech implants / € 6600 for Straumann implants

Branemark bridge

The bridge is made of a standard resin as a “prosthesis” but the teeth are composite and the body is metallic. Its great advantage is that it is easy to repair and overall, the bridge is lightweight. It is also possible to remove the bridge at any time if necessary and adjust it as needed.

  • Price: € 3500

    • 6x Neo Biotech: 6x 550 €
    • 6x Healing roller: 6x 60 €
    • Other estimated items: 100 €
      (anesthesia, X-ray, mouthwash…)

Total: 7 000 €

2. Toothless jaw: Removable prosthesis fixated on implants

Prosthesis supported by implants is a solution in situations where the patient has lost all teeth in the jaw or in the mandible, or their existing total prosthesis loses its adhesion due to gradual loss of bone tissue.

Hybrid removable prosthesis supported by implants (4 upper / 2 to 4 lower implants)

  • New removable prosthesis: € 650
  • Adjusting an old removable prosthesis after the implants have healed: €100

Healing - the implant merges with your bone

This is followed by the healing phase lasting 2 to 3 months (depending on the type of the implant). The healing period is the time for the so-called osseointegration when the implant surface is inhabited by the patient’s own bone cells and thus the implant literally merges with the bone.

Phase 2: Preparation of the retention system

After successful osseointegration, an imprint of the implants position is made. There are several trials (4 to 5 appointments) and the work is usually completed within 2 to 3 weeks. The retention system (locators or partition) for the implants is made, followed by making of the final prosthesis.

The support of the prosthesis is based on the MATRIX-PATRIX principle

The prosthesis is removable, i.e., the patient can take it off and clean it, put it back in their mouth. The prosthesis is only supported by implants for better stability. The chewing pressure is transmitted through the gums.

Prosthesis on locators (the rubber bands in the prosthesis must be replaced once a year)
