Photocomposite filling as a replacement for the lost part of a tooth

Content of the article:

Photocomposite filling

Under the photocomposite filling, we can imagine a white filling which fills and replaces the part of the tooth lost to tooth decay.

This filling material, which is white, plastic and aesthetic, solidifies after it has been applied to a pre-drilled part of the tooth in a reaction we call polymerization. It is a reaction in which the solidification process begins with the supply of light energy from the polymerization lamp. This is why we sometimes also refer to them as light-curing composites.

Treatment with photocomposite fillings

When treatment is done with this material, it is important to follow the correct working procedure as the final aesthetic result depends on it and, last but not least, the durability of the filling as such.

Every procedure in our clinic takes place after administration of local anesthesia, i.e., painlessly, even when fillings are involved. One of the most important steps is to create a dry working area using an insulating rubber membrane (dental dam).

Why a photocomposite filling?

Currently the most widely used aesthetic material, light-curing composites have many advantages over the older amalgam fillings. Composites do not need to be pre-mixed, they cure under light, and thus the physician has more time to form the material into the correct anatomical shape of the tooth.

When preparing the tooth, care is taken to remove only those parts affected by tooth decay. The white filling forms a solid chemical bond with the tooth utilizing the so-called adhesive system. In the case of amalgam fillings, it is necessary to drill away a large volume of tissue in order for the material to hold firmly (mechanical bonding), which unnecessarily removes even healthy parts of the tooth.

Use of photocomposite fillings

The use of photocomposite fillings varies. They are most often used in the treatment of small and medium-sized dental caries. Where the tooth decay is larger, and a larger number of hard dental tissues needs to be replaced, we treat the defect with a ceramic semi-crown/ crown.

These can also be applied in treatment of traumatic and mechanical teeth defects, in additional structures prior to root canal treatment, in additional structures under ceramic crowns or in splinting of wobbly teeth.
