How does CT (Computed Tomography) work?

In its classic (hospital) form, CT is a relatively bulky device. It progressively scans the examined area using a series of flat slices, which are then assembled by a computer into the final image. This technology entails a relatively high radiation dose. Modern CBCT examination involves a radiation dose comparable to a classic OPG (panoramic radiograph) and provides significantly more information.

What does CBCT mean?

The significant reduction in radiation dose during a CBCT examination is ensured by the principle of cone-beam X-rays (CB = cone beam). This examination allows for obtaining three-dimensional images (models) of the maxilla, mandible, or small targeted areas, providing more information and thus leading to less invasiveness during treatment.

What advantages does 3D examination offer in dentistry?

Implantology

For the correct selection and placement of a suitable implant, precise information is needed regarding the quantity and quality of bone, the position of the maxillary sinus floor, and the course of important nerves. This allows the implantologist to choose the ideal size of the dental implant and its insertion direction to safely avoid all these structures. With more information, the procedure itself is faster, simpler, and safer.

Extraction of wisdom teeth or unerupted teeth

CT examination provides an invaluable amount of information about the position of wisdom teeth relative to important structures (maxillary sinus or the canal containing the nerve innervating the lower lip). This makes even a routine procedure safer and minimizes complications.

Endodontics

CT imaging allows for a detailed assessment of root canal filling quality, the presence and extent of potential inflammatory changes, the presence of perforation, anatomical variations in root shape and root canals, and other very valuable information about the root system. This objectively increases the success rate of this treatment.

Periodontology

CT provides valuable information about the extent of bone damage around the teeth, including the precise localization of the affected area, allowing treatment to be directly targeted to that region.

CBCT at Smart Dental

Our device, the Planmeca, is among the absolute top CT devices. It is exceptionally fast, precise, and very safe due to reduced radiation exposure.
